🔐 A practical guide to assessing Canadian counter-tariffs, U.S. Section 338 duties, origin, classification and entry requirements.

Summary: Canada’s new counter-tariffs on specified U.S.-origin goods took effect on 8 September 2026, with rates of 15%, 25% and 50%. At the same time, the United States is applying and modifying additional Section 338 duties on specified Canadian products, with further product changes effective 15 September and certain import bans scheduled for 29 September. For customs and trade professionals, the key issue is not simply the headline tariff rate. The correct treatment depends on the product, tariff classification, origin, applicable additional measure, effective date, exclusions and the customs entry. This practitioner guide sets out a practical framework for reviewing Canada–U.S. tariff exposure and avoiding common customs errors.
