US P&R: Hydrofluorocarbon Restrictions Issued: Final Rule

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) published a final rule that restricts the use of hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) in specific industries. Access the rule.

The final rule further establishes "recordkeeping and reporting requirements; a process for submitting technology transitions petitions; and addresses certain other elements related to the effective implementation of the [AIM Act]."

By lowering production via an allocation plan, promoting reclamation and lowering HFC discharges, and facilitating the transition to next-generation technologies and adaptation, the 2020 AIM Act granted the EPA the power to regulate HFCs.

Requirements for labelling, recordkeeping, and reporting will be used to "inform EPA of the transitions that are occurring in those sectors and subsectors addressed by this rule."

This final regulation will go into effect on December 26, 2023. The deadlines for each sector to adhere to the HFC limits will vary and will run from January 1, 2025, to January 1, 2028.
