EU: Burundi Sanctions Updates

The European Union has decided to prolong the sanctions imposed on Burundi until 31st October 2024.
The European Union took a significant step towards promoting democracy and protecting human rights in Burundi by implementing its first set of restrictive measures in 2015. The EU targeted four individuals who were playing a destructive role in the country's political landscape. These individuals were responsible for undermining democracy, obstructing efforts to find a political solution in Burundi, and committing acts that violated international human rights and humanitarian law. The restrictive measures aimed to hold these individuals accountable for their actions and to send a clear message that such behavior would not be tolerated.
Renew Sanctions
On 25 October 2023, the Council decided to renew the restrictive measures for another year. The move reaffirmed the EU's commitment to upholding human rights and promoting democracy in Burundi. However, the Council also delisted three individuals who had shown a willingness to cooperate and had made progress in improving the human rights situation in the country. The decision to delist these individuals was a recognition of their efforts and an encouragement for others to follow suit.
Individuals, Organisations, and Entities listed in Burundi
As a result of the current measures in place, the restrictions affect only one person. This designated individual is subject to an asset freeze, and EU citizens and companies are not allowed to provide funds to him. Additionally, he is barred from entering or passing through EU member states due to travel restrictions.
The EU continuously monitors developments in Burundi, and it reserves the right to modify its sanctions regime or adjust the list of individuals, entities, and groups who are subject to restrictive measures based on the situation on the ground.
