Get the latest scoop on the EU's Niger Sanctions Framework. Discover how the EU is cracking down on threats to peace, stability, and human rights in Niger.
The European Union established a framework for sanctions against Niger in order to penalise individuals and organisations that threaten peace, stability, and security in Niger, undermine democracy and the rule of law, or violate serious human rights violations or abuses, as well as applicable international humanitarian law in Niger.
Travel restrictions, asset freezes, and the inability to transfer money with a humanitarian exemption are some of the penalties imposed on Niger. The application of the sanctions was preceded by the military coup and President Bazoum's arrest on July 26, 2023 (press release).
A military coup tried to remove President Mohamed Bazoum, who was elected democratically, on July 26, 2023. The head of the Presidential guard, General Tchiani, declared himself the new president of the Conseil national pour la sauvegarde de la patrie (CNSP) two days later.
President Bazoum, his wife, and their son are still being held in the presidential palace since he has refused to step down.
