EU renews Russia sanctions & makes human rights designations
The EU has renewed its Russia sectoral sanctions for a further 6 months (until 31 July 2024) and listed 4 individuals and 1 entity under its global human rights sanctions regime (decision, regulation):
Valentina Levashova, Ludmila Smolkina, and Oleg Alypov, who are respectively 2 judges and a prosecutor involved in the arrest and detention of opposition Russian politician, Vladimir Kara-Murza; and
the Safe Internet League and its Chairwoman, Ekaterina Mizulina, allegedly responsible for censorship against internet content creators.

Mali
In view of the situation in Mali, the Council of the European Union has, in addition to the existing sanctions regime of the United Nations, with Regulation (EU) 2021/2201, a framework regulation that makes it possible to independently impose restrictive measures against persons and institutions at EU level, that threaten the peace, security or stability of Mali or hinder the implementation of the political transition in Mali. Regulation (EU) 2017/1770 now contains two lists (Annex I UN list and now Annex IA EU list) in which the persons and entities are listed who are subject to financial sanctions.
