What Are the New Sanctions Against Hamas and How Will They Affect the Terror Group?
Travel restrictions, asset freezes, and weapons embargoes are all part of a package of penalties on the leadership of Hamas that are coordinated with the US and are intended to impede Hamas activities in Gaza and wherever its leaders are based.
The Foreign Secretary announces that the UK "stands in solidarity" with the impacted Palestinian people and urges all sides to consent to humanitarian pauses that would for life-saving supplies to reach Gaza.
Two Hamas financiers and four senior Hamas commanders are the targets of UK sanctions. The tight restrictions have been imposed on Hamas' leadership in an attempt to stop the terrorist organization's activities.
The political chief of Hamas in Gaza, Yahya Sinwar, is one of the members of the organization's political and military branches that the UK has sanctioned today. According to reports, he took part in the vicious assaults that occurred against Israel last month.
Muhammad Deif, who is in charge of the group's armed wing, is also named.
Even if the terror group's commanders are controlling things from outside of Gaza, the sanctions demonstrate that they are unable to avoid the repercussions of their acts. Among those included are a money launderer in Sudan and a financier with headquarters in Lebanon.
David Cameron, the foreign secretary, stated:
Together with the United States and our other partners, we will keep using every weapon at our disposal to thwart the heinous actions of this terrorist group, making it more difficult for them to function and isolating them from the international community.
Hamas also affects the Palestinian people as victims. We will always support humanitarian pauses in order to dramatically increase the amount of life-saving assistance that can go to Gaza because we stand in solidarity with them.
When the organisation was first established in the late 1980s with the intention of destroying Israel, all of the people who were sanctioned by the US and the UK were singled out for their financial or leadership responsibilities. The UK has already sanctioned Hamas, including the group itself, and these designations only strengthen that.
Travel restrictions, asset freezes, and arms embargoes imposed by the UK, which prohibit the transfer of weapons and military hardware from a UK national to the designated recipient, now apply to the following:
Yahya Sinwar is the political head of Hamas in Gaza and a prominent member of the organisation.
Muhammed Deif: Deif is a top Hamas figurehead who leads the group's military wing, the Izz al-Din al-Qassam Brigades (IQB), which is responsible for the terrorist operations that were announced in October 2023.
Marwan Issa is the deputy commander of the IQB and a prominent figure in the Hamas organisation.
Musa Dudin: An officer of Hamas headquartered in the West Bank, Dudin has supplied the organisation with weapons so they may carry out terrorist attacks.
Abdelbasit Hamza: Hamza was a financier for Hamas located in Sudan. He controlled a network of businesses that engaged in currency trading and money laundering to fund Hamas.
Nabil Chouman: Using his currency exchange in Lebanon, Chouman has sent money to Hamas.
The US and the UK are unified in supporting Israel in its conflict with Hamas. Through the Prime Minister's recent trips to the area to meet with colleagues, we continue to utilise our diplomatic efforts to promote a two-state solution that will offer justice and security for both Israelis and Palestinians.
This year, the UK has quadrupled its financial contribution to the Occupied Palestinian Territories and supplied 51 tonnes of life-saving supplies to the area.
The Prime Minister has made it plain that Israel's troops must act in accordance with international law and put an end to extreme violence in the West Bank. He has also urged all parties to provide the humanitarian pauses required to enable additional supplies to reach Gaza.
