IWD 2024: Celebrating Inspiring Women In Customs & World Trade

How Can We Recognize and Empower Inspiring Women in Customs and World Trade? At Customs Manager Ltd., we don't ask, we DO!

At Customs Manager Ltd, we commemorate International Women's Day, a worldwide celebration honouring the contributions of women to international commerce and customs. On Friday, March 8, 2024, we celebrated women in customs and global commerce with a live event. It was an opportunity to listen to enlightening talks and comments by female thought leaders and leave inspired.

An Inclusive City - an Inclusive World - It Just Makes Sense

We were privileged to be joined by Elizabeth Mainelli, the Lady Mayoress of the City of London, for the opening address. She reminded us about the importance of International Women's Day in Customs and Global Trade and said "Today, we are highlighting the crucial role that women play in customs management and global commerce,"

She stressed that this year's IWD theme, “Inspiring Inclusion”, is so important to the City of London. She explained that inclusion sits at the heart of the work of the mayoral charity, "The Lord Mayor's Appeal", and the Lord Mayor’s theme for his year in office: “Connect To Prosper”……which is a call to action for all of us to build bridges, forge connections, and foster an environment where every individual can thrive.

Women can thrive in the European Institutions and Customs

Deputy Director Perolat of Customs in DG TAXUD of the European Commission gave a presentation in which she detailed her path from France to Brussels and into senior posts in the European public administration. She impressively highlighted how women may effectively pursue a career in Customs. She is now in the heart of the vital work that is being done to revise the Union Customs Code and the EU Customs Union, which marks a major milestone in the field of customs law and practice. Considering her own professional journey as well as the achievements of other European women who hold public office, she agreed with the Lady Mayoress that while there has been a lot of progress made, there is still a lot of work to be done to position brilliant women in jobs that are appropriate for them and to assist their professional progression. If I can lead in customs, so can you!

Next, Carol Lynch, who is the head of the BDO Customs Practice in Dublin, gave her insights on the appreciation of women for one of the worlds' most significant business advisory firms. She detailed her journey to become a partner at BDO and provided her perspective on the companies' high respect for women in the business consulting and customs profession. The remarks made by the Lady Mayoress on the significance of highlighting the achievements of women in customs were also backed by her. One method to recognize achievements and provide support to women who are going through similar experiences, according to Lynch, is to discuss tales of women who have triumphed over challenges and achieved success. She concluded her talk with the wise words: "If I can lead in customs, so can you!"

A successful customs business is in your reach, too!

In the course of the Questions and Answers session, Enrika Naujokė, who is an entrepreneur in the customs industry, discussed with Ms. Lynch and Ms. Perolat the ways in which the accomplishments of women serve as a benchmark for excellence and inspire someone of the younger generation to strive for success in their professional lives.

In their answers, both speakers brought attention to the helpful viewpoints, creative ideas, and collaborative spirit that women bring to the table to push forward development in the areas of global business and customs. Ms. Lynch stressed the need to recognise and honour the accomplishments of women and to cultivate an atmosphere that encourages each woman and man to realise her and his full potential.

"Let's continue the work on a thriving community of customs specialists in a world that is more inclusive"

In closing the event, Arne Mielken, the Managing Director of Customs Manager Ltd, expressed thanks to speakers and participants for shining a light on the vital role that women play in customs & global trade: "I trust that this virtual event, which was centred around the themes of -1- Inspiration - and 2 - Inclusion enabled us, present positive stories of female success in customs, to form stronger connections and move forward together, supporting one another wholeheartedly, and thriving community of customs specialists in a world that is more inclusive."

Our Recommendation

Customs management is an exceptionally specialised field that requires many years to acquire mastery in. But Customs Professionals are rare! Their work is crucial in ensuring that products traverse borders efficiently and affordably. Without them, male or female, it is impossible for a global enterprise that deals in commodities to flourish. We think, the majority of customs professionals are women. Therefore, it is crucial to provide genuine career opportunities for customs managers, support gender equality and inclusion, and be cognizant of masculine bias. Then, by creating an attractive work environment, based on inclusion and non-discrimination, you can ensure that your organisation can benefit from compliant, effective, and efficient customs procedures. Therefore, any international business that trades products may support IWD. It is of interest to you.
