The biggest U.S. tariff overhaul in decades is reshaping global trade.

The New Section 301 Tariffs Reshape Global Trade

One of the most significant U.S. trade policy changes in recent years has now become reality.

The Administration has introduced a completely new Section 301 tariff frameworkĀ covering 60 economies and approximately 99.4% of U.S. imports. Countries implementing import bans on forced labour products will generally face 10% tariffs, while most other economies—including China—face 12.5% tariffs, alongside new tariff-rate quotas, capped duty mechanisms and product-specific exemptions.

For importers, the changes fundamentally alter sourcing decisions, landed costs and customs compliance planning. Businesses should immediately review supplier exposure, customs classifications and country-of-origin strategies.

Canada and Brazil Face Significant New Tariff Measures

North and South American trade continues to evolve rapidly.

The Administration has announced additional 50% Section 338 tariffs on selected Canadian goods, scheduled to take effect on 19 August 2026, while 25% Section 301 tariffs on Brazilian goodsĀ are already operational together with detailed CBP filing guidance and new Chapter 99 reporting requirements.

Companies importing from Canada or Brazil should carefully evaluate product coverage, customs declarations, warehouse strategies and shipment timing to minimise unnecessary duty exposure.

CBP Expands Customs Compliance Requirements

Alongside this week's major tariff announcements, U.S. Customs and Border Protection has introduced several significant operational changes, including:

  • New HTS Revision 12 Chapter 99 tariff provisions

  • CAPE filing process for IEEPA tariff refunds

  • ACH-only payment requirements for Post Summary Corrections

  • Final antidumping and countervailing duties on Chinese L-Lysine

  • New sugar tariff-rate quota allocations

  • Jordan reciprocal trade agreement

  • USMCA review developments

  • New forced labour Withhold Release Orders

  • Intellectual property recordation updates

As customs compliance becomes increasingly complex, businesses should ensure customs systems, brokers and internal procedures remain aligned with the latest CBP requirements.
